The War Between the States has come to eastern North Carolina, bringing hardships, pillaging, and fear to the local residents. For those left at home, the struggle to procure the needs of daily life is all-consuming; for those serving in the armies of both North and South, death is a daily companion. Against this backdrop, an unlikely and forbidden love affair between a local woman and a Union officer leads to difficult choices for them both—choices that will tear them apart and force them to deal with the abandonment of their dream of a life together.
Despite broken hearts, misunderstandings, and missed chances, Penny and Ryan strive to survive the dangers and ravages of war and make the best of their separate futures. With the surrender of the South at Appomattox, Penny realizes she has one last chance to either find the man she loves or settle for a life alone.

On Saturday October 22, the North Carolina Society of Historians at their annual awards meeting honored B. J. Vaughn with the Clark Cox award for Historical Fiction for the novel MUDDY WATERS.Judges comments: "..it feels like one is reading a living history rather than one fictitious by nature. The book is wonderfully written, and as the story unfolds, it is realistic in that it 'could' happen and probably did to many during the War Between the States, and it is exciting, heart-breaking, tense and relaxing...The story which is difficult to chronicle in this limited space, has been lovingly crafted by an author whose heart is in the South and whose soul is in her characters. Kudos for a job well-done, Mrs. Vaughn."

Muddy Waters And the Man in The Chimney edition by BJ Vaughn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I recently purchased a book by a new author that is outstanding. The book is "Muddy Waters And the Man in the Chimney" by Betty Vaughn. It is a story of love found and separated during the War Between the States. The research and accuracy of the time period and the lives of the people that suffered through the Civil War gives the book a true reality and you almost relive this American tragedy as you read the book. The found and then lost of love of Penny (the southern belle) and Ryan (the Union soldier wounded in battle and nursed back to health by Penny)is heart rendering and a story that even us "hardened" males can appreciate. As a first time author, Betty Vaughn has created a masterpiece and set a high standard for future sequels which I understand are in the works. It's a great read and one you can't put down!
The book Muddy Waters/The Man in the Chimney was an enjoyable read. At first I was surprised at how quickly the heroine and her household help fell under the spell of Ryan Madison, but after getting a little more into the story this didn't bother me.
Since the area is familiar to me, I found the travels of the characters, battles, troop movements, very interesting. I have a relative in New Bern and truly enjoyed details about the city at that time.
The author painted a wonderful picture of everyday life for those left behind in the south and the shortages they endured. Also detailing how each garden crop provided sustenance through the winter months and explaining how the various garden vegetables were preserved. The still Penny set up and how that was done was fascinating.
One thing that would have helped me, would have been historical maps of battle sites, rivers, train lines, towns, etc.
Basically, the author left me wanting for more so I look forward to the sequel and post war reconstruction.
Ms. Vaughn has written a real page turner. The book places the reader in Eastern North Carolina during a time of turmoil with an intimate look at what life was like on a daily basis. While many books have been published detailing the importance of the Wimington, NC port during the Civil War, this book provides an overview of the ports in New Bern and Washington, NC and and their importance to the war effort.
It is obvious to the reader that much research was required to provide this overview of the events of this period of the War between the States. Ms. Vaughn uses a descriptive prose to describle in intimate detail the difficulties of the local citizens and those in the military, both North and South.
I highly recommend MUDDY WATERS for the serious student of Civil War history or for reading pleasure.
In Muddy Waters, the author, B.J. Vaughn, transports the reader to a time in American history when neighbors and families in eastern North Carolina struggled desperately to salvage their food, their property, and their lives amidst Confederate and Union combat and scavengers who scoured the countryside. Intense fighting was so close that residents could smell the smoke and hear the cannons roar. The author is so adept at describing in explicit detail the southern plantations, homes, furnishings, food preservation, and culture that the reader vicariously experiences the southern lifestyle prevalent during the time period of the War Between the States. She also instills within the reader a sense of anxiety and foreboding pervasive in the lives of families and troops.
Vaughn delineates the characters so clearly that the reader feels an intimate connection to them. As if daily struggles weren't enough, Penny, a southern, genteel young woman and Ryan, an attractive Union officer, become embroiled in a love affair which, by its very nature, is problematic. The various plots and intrigues, surrounding these star-crossed lovers, intensifies from chapter to chapter as one begins to wonder if they will ever be able to build a life together.
Muddy Waters is fast-paced, action packed, and full of adventure. Danger lurks at every turn as plantation owners and other residents of eastern North Carolina strive to snare some degree of normalcy from a world-gone-mad. The storyline moves from Civil War battles and skirmishes to the surrender of the Confederacy and the ensuing changes confronting a beleaguered South. Not only has B.J. Vaughn written an exceptional work of fiction, but she has also written a text that has historical significance as well. The action that revolves around some of the real people, battles, and terrain of the Kinston, Woodington, Deep Run and New Bern areas is so subtlely interwoven with the fictional characters that the reader becomes immersed in this reenactment of history. One is almost sorry to see this book end and can only hope that a sequel is soon to be published by this gifted, up-and-coming writer.
