Dysphoria and Grace The Night Blind Saga Volume 1 Christina Rozelle Christian Bentulan 9781545506592 Books

This book is absolutely amazing! Intense and not for the faint of heart. This story is real, I mean horrifyingly realistic. It's gritty, raw, hardcore, erotic, disturbing, sad, heart wrenchingly devastating! Imagine the worst possible thing you could imagine happening, and this is probably worse. And that is part of what makes this story so amazing! As you read it, you believe it! You feel Ophelia's pain! You understand it, you may not have lived her life, but you are able to understand what she is feeling and why. There is a little bit of us all in her! She is one hell of a main character!
I have pages of notes on my thoughts of the things that happen in this book, and have been pondering for a few days now how to write this review. But I think what I have already said is enough. You just need to read it, go into it with an open mind knowing there might be something in here that is hard for you to read, because this is not a romantic end of the world zombie story LOL oh no, but there is some pretty hot sex... so you do a get a bit of romance I guess.
All in all, this is my new favorite series that has me hanging on the edge of my seat waiting for the next book. Left me in a hangover that had me jotting down thoughts and notes for 3 days after finishing. So I say to you, just read it!

Dysphoria and Grace The Night Blind Saga Volume 1 Christina Rozelle Christian Bentulan 9781545506592 Books Reviews

Loved this book, not your normal zombie read. I loved following grace though her journey and watching her battle her demons, and being able to overcome the mental struggles even in a dead world there's still hope.
This book was extremely intense! Heartbreaking and lovely and rough around the edges. Be warned, as the author herself admits, this story is full of triggers. You may not love it as much as I did, but in a dystopian tomorrow I believed in Grace. I tripped with her. I loved with her. I also cried with her. And Evie/Lucy and Gideon helped make Grace whole, or as whole as she could be at this point. Now to wait patiently for book 2.
WARNING Themes prevalent in this story are as follows physical/mental/emotional abuse, child abuse, suicide/homicide, government corruption/experiments, wicca, sex(gay/het), and the undead.

At first I could not get into this story. The main issue being Grace. I normally detest main character's that have a negative attitude constantly and that was Grace in spades. As I kept reading I found myself connecting to Grace/Ophelia. I am Grace in many ways or used to be I should say. Her attitude mainly stems from her childhood; a very dark one at that which I could relate to in some ways. She came off a certain way because that's the only way she found she could protect herself(her heart) best from those she believed were going to cause her pain in some way. I found myself warming up to Grace when her best friend Lucy/Eve was introduced. She seemed opposite to her in many ways and alike in others. Lucy came across as the best part of her many times and I found myself seeing more layers to this character(Grace) than initially. I thought this was great and very well done. The circle/people you surround yourself with are often reflections of one self. I thought the author did a great job bringing that to life. She used those around Grace to bring up moments in her past that revealed where Graces true feelings lied.

Although there was a lot of things crammed into this story at a quick pace, it worked very well together. It was a nice blend of new age religion, spirituality, physical manifestations due to said religion with bits of sci-fi and present politics to top it off. This story felt very now; an alternate reality to ours. I was really happy to see main character's in the QUILTBAG ( LGBTQQ2IA) spectrum be represented even if they did not have great outcomes. I dislike seeing character's in this spectrum not be able to have happy endings because so much of that permeates that genre already, but all in all, it worked for this book. Any time zombies get involved, happy endings rarely ever occur. I'm hoping, however, that at least some character's who fall under this category are able to get some sort of happy ending after this series is over. Not to say those who don't fall under this category don't get happy endings. I want as many good folk to live after all.

The author could do better at character's physical descriptions. Some character's were better described than other's which I found unfortunate. I understand many author's don't go into a lot of detail because they want the reader to have their own idea about what a character looks like. But I had issues even coming up with an idea for certain character's but that could just be me. Everywhere else, the author does a really great job. The setting descriptions were good and the sex scenes were decent as well.

My biggest issue with this story was toward the end. I dislike love triangles if they don't become triads(LOL) and or love triangles that become a couple that I feel have not had time to develop feelings as intense as love and quickly fall into sex after experiencing trauma. But this is more a personal issue. I felt that the feelings that developed between character's was rushed. I can deal with instalove but it didn't quit gel in this book at the end. I have no doubt I'll find the love between certain character's more believable as the series goes on bearing nothing happens to either one of the people in said relationship.

I surprisingly loved this story more than the author's young adult series, The Treemakers, which shares many similar themes and character characteristics. Despite some things I have said in this review, I very much recommend it to all and am really looking forward to rest of the series and seeing some things tie up that weren't in this first installment, like the massacre that occurred and if it has anything to do with the corrupt government/government officials. As for the zombies, I'm hoping to see if any changes occur in them that would put them in another category of the standard zombie, which they pretty much seem to be at the point in the story.
The energy in this apocalyptic story grabs you and holds on tight. Our main character is not your usual shining star who does everything good and right. She has a heart but is afraid to let it out for fear of being hurt. This story shows you some of the dark side of human nature so be warned that this might not be for everyone. Sadly tragic and truthful yet makes for a fantastic read. Well written and makes you think long after turning the last page.
Dysphoria and Grace is unlike any other book I've read. I'm not normally a fan of NA, but when I was given a chance to read the book a bit early I took a chance. I loved all of Christina Rozelle's previous books. I was warned that there would be some triggers for me in the book, but figured you only live once. I am so glad I took this chance. This book had anger, hate, love, fear, and so many others emotions that I don't normally get from books. They mat have one or two, but nothing like this.

The love scenes, though normally not my cup of tea, were very well written and not over done. There was the right amount of violence. Everything seemed to happen as it was suppose to, and kept me guessing the whole time. I'm not used to being kept on my toes and having no clue where a story is going. I'm always able to figure out at least portions of a book before it happens. That is not the case with Dysphoria and Grace.

I love seeing Grace/Ophelia grow as a person throughout this book, and can't wait to see what happens next. This is the must re-read of the year.
